Wolfburn Whisky
Yay… I won a prize to visit Wolfburn Whisky Distillery!
On World Whisky Day, I bought a bottle of the very new
and young Wolfburn Single Malt Whisky at our local
specialist off Licence J A Mackay in Thurso, and was
entered into a pize draw! A big surprise and so lovely to
hear that i had won! And my prize… A Whisky Tour for
four at Wolfburn Distillery, I was delighted and invited our
super neighbours to join us.
Oranges & lemons…
It’s that cosy time of year, when I love to make
marmalade. Seville oranges are in abundance, and while
they’re not quite as sweet and juicy as other oranges,
they’re the best for making tangy marmalade. And so,
locating the jam pan at the back of the cupboard…

Feathered friends
The RSPB regularly collect data on the number of different
species of birds that visit gardens throughout the UK,
through the Big Garden Birdwatch Program. An hour is
spent on the day, counting the highest number seen at
any one time, this ensures birds aren’t counted twice, if
they should fly away and return a moment later. Here’s a
glimpse of a few of our own garden visitors….

Weyland and Lynne enjoying a little
sunshine on the Nile, April 2017
A little about us, and a very warm
welcome to you.
We so love to meet you and have
welcomed guests from over 30
countries to our Highland home
that looks out across heather covered
moors to the peaks of Sutherland.
We bought the Auld Post Office in
a derelict condition in 1995, with
no running water, no electricity and
not much of a roof!
Weyland always wanted to renovate
an old property and fortunately, he
has now fulfilled his dream!
Chatting about our retirement while
on holiday in India, we thought we’d
like to open our home for guests to
have bed and breakfast.
The house wasn’t quite big enough,
and Weyland sketched plans for an
extension in the sand!
We felt it was important for our
guests to have privacy, and to come
and go as they please.
And so, two en-suite guest rooms
were added, each with French doors
to the garden and a private front
entrance.
We feel it works for our guests and
for us too. We interact as much as
our guests want us to, and we all
enjoy our own privacy.
Although we like furry friends, we
have no family pets, just the happy
hens in the garden.
We like to travel ourselves and learn
a little about other cultures. A
special trip for us was visiting a
school in Dhampus, high up in the
Himalayas, it was so moving when
the children burst into song, singing
the Nepalese National Anthem.
On a cycling trip across Turkey,
when everything we carried was in
the pannias on our bikes. We learned
to pack minimally! Although knowing
that we needed everything including
the kitchen sink! Our ‘bathroom’
was a toolbox mounted on the back
of one of the bikes, and the ‘kitchen’
on the other!
The kindness of people on both
these trips overwhelmed us. They
weren’t holidays, they were travel
experiences, and we learned to
recognise the difference.
We believe our own experiences
help us to understand a little more
about the needs of others when
far away from home. If we have
it, you can be sure we’ll share it.

Gin Musketeers Mark III
So lovely to have our B&B hosting friends back to
The Auld Post Office once again, for a celebration
over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
A wee tasting of Gin from the Emerald Isle
with a little food pairing too!
Super to have so much help in the kitchen and oh so
funny when… three of us donned identical aprons
covered in little chickens! Our own little ‘hen party’!
April
Orienteering!
While I love to roam in the woodland and enjoy the
scrunch underfoot, as I meander along the paths and
tracks that weave their way through Dunnet Forest. It’s
many years since I ventured on a trip of orienteering!
A Royal Affair!
HRH Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, Chieftain at
The Mey Highland and Cultural Games.
It was a first this year to invite Uncle Sam’s Highlanders
from the USA, bringing adaptive games to Caithness.
Spring
The coast is close…
And the walking is truly splendid.
Enjoying a few days out over the quiet winter months,
We’ve checked out locations for walks
to suit all levels and abilities,
and discovered one or two that are almost a secret!
